My neighbour and I decided to throw a get-together for the kids in our neighbourhood. There was no real reason for the party, but these children are from terrible families, seldom offered a chance to have some fun away from stressors. We prepared loads of sandwiches and drinks, and more than one set of parents contributed cakes. Balloons, paper cups and a few decorations came courtesy of the P.T.A. who also provided the music and rec room for the party! Best of all, there was a clown! Things got off to a good start at about 3 o’clock that afternoon. Almost every child in the neighbourhood was present. Though it was Springtime and the weather was usually quite cool, the two of us were taking no chances with climate control. My neighbour and I personally persuaded one man, who is an HVAC technician, to tuneup the HVAC component in the space we would use for the get-together. He insisted it needed no servicing, and was running fine. Just to be sure, I asked him to send a tech anyway. It was almost six by now, and the children were still dancing and genuinely enjoying themselves. Suddenly, there was a change in the temperature and the space began to feel hot and sticky. That’s when I observed that the make-up on the clown’s face was starting to melt into a horror scene! The HVAC component had stopped working for sure. In a panic, I called up the HVAC corporation to find out if the component had been checked on by any of his repairmen before the party. It hadn’t. Well, that’s just splendid!
