My favorite films are superhero films; I couldn’t wait to see the new Superman movie with my brother, Mark and our friends. The people I was with and I got to the theater early, got all our popcorn and candy ahead of time, and were some of the first in the theater to get in and claim seats. Though while I adore eating candy and popcorn and drinking sodas as I watch films – it’s half the reason I adore going to a theater, after all – the other reason I adore going to a theater in the dead of summertime is the fact that they regularly make sure to blast the AC in each theater as though the cinema is trying to combat a fire. Now imagine being in sweltering heat and finally getting a reprieve in the form of a dark, cool room as you watch your favorite superhero fighting crime. There’s nothing better than feeling the cool comfort of an industrial air conditioner. It’s simple, it’s kind of obvious, but it is so satisfying. Seriously, I don’t assume there is anything better than the feeling of walking into an air conditioned room that feels more akin to a snowstorm than a theater. I remember Mark turned to me and the other guys in the middle of the movie and said, “I can’t even assume my toes, guys! It’s so cold.” And I just laughed, because I knew it was true – that’s the power of central air, after all. Something the people I was with and I all may take for granted sometimes, but would all miss dearly if it were gone. Central air conditioning is the best thing since sliced bread, I’d say.
