Living in the Northeast, the winters can be very cold. The coldest time always seems to be in late January or February. The heating system on our house was over 20 years old. It was like waiting for something bad to happen. And on the coldest day of January our furnace stopped working. We woke up to a chill in the house and I figured my wife has just turned it down for the night which she sometimes did. But when I turned up the thermostat and waited for the familiar sound of forced air through the vents, nothing happened. I went to the basement in my bathrobe to take a look. I did not have any experience with HVAC systems so it was a waste of time for me to look at the cold furnace. We had used a local furnace and AC company several times to have the unit cleaned and serviced. Their sticker was on the furnace unit and I gave them a call while I was still in the basement in my bathrobe. They said they had had a number of calls that morning but could be to our place in about 4 hours. That sounded good but I knew it would be a cold 4 hours. My wife decided to make a batch of cookies to warm up the kitchen. Not only did the house smell great from the cookies but it helped warm up the room where we sat drinking coffee wearing several layers of clothing. The HVAC repair company came out just as promised and with only a few checks of our system they determined that we needed a new thermocouple on our furnace. He had one on the truck and within an hour it was installed and we could feel the welcome heat coming from our vents. We had feared that we might need a whole new furnace but thankfully a small repair and service call were all that we needed.
