So, I had been out of work for a while now. I desperately needed a job – any job, at this point, because all of our savings had been spent and our unemployment benefits were totally exhausted. Hungry and on the verge of homelessness, it was scaring the daylights out of me knowing how close I was to losing everything. It’s not that no jobs were available at all, and if anything it was the opposite. The problem was that the job search had a single requirement which could not be compromised: I needed a workspace with good air quality.
I suffer from serious pollen irritations, and was compelled to leave my last job because of the bad air quality in that work environment. While at work, I was sneezing and coughing all the time, mostly due to the poor functioning of the Heating and A/C system. I remember hearing that the A/C unit was installed in the late seventies, but I thought it was just a myth! The younger staff members weren’t even alive yet. There had been various verbal and written requests to upgrade the beat-up Heating and A/C system, but it seemed the management wasn’t interested in acting on them. The A/C serviceman came by fairly often to service it, but what good is it doing to service a practically broken machine?
With no suitable place of employment in sight, I was out searching for any business with a “help wanted” sign in the window by this point. All the companies and stores were either too hot, too cold, or had no Heating and A/C plan at all. I was ready to take whatever work I could get, regardless of the absence of temperature control, when the perfect solution turned up. I was provided an opportunity to work from home! My apartment is not perfect by any stretch, however it does have an efficient, adequately tested Heating and A/C system.
