When I was growing up, our parents were adamant about making sure I knew how to take care of myself. As early as eight years old, our dad taught me how to handle a ton of household chores, such as washing the dishes, taking out the garbage, cleaning as well as dusting the house, as well as more. As I got older, our dad also showed me how to split some living expenses for the current home – I’m ecstatic she did, as I use many of her little tricks to this afternoon! The thing is, I thought that our parents as well as their approach to teaching self-reliance was the norm. It wasn’t until I moved in with 2 friends after school, that I came to a scary realization – I was an exception! Both of our friends were clueless about household repair, especially when it came to our heating as well as cooling systems. I even had to show them how to update the air filter, which I thought was official expertise! As I taught our roommates about the basics of heating as well as cooling systems, as well as practices to keep our energy bills low, they began to realize just how little they knew about maintaining these appliances. By the end of the conversation, I was explaining to them about warning signs for HVAC repair being needed. The rule of thumb was simple – if it takes more than an hour to get the apartment cooled down by multiple degrees, the air conditioning plan needed to be tuned up or possibly repaired. The same went for the heating system, as the oil furnace likely needed repair if it took over an hour to sizzling our apartment by multiple degrees.
