I rely heavily on modern conveniences. I admit that, looking back to years past, I can’t imagine how homeowners got by without modern luxuries that I take for granted. I don’t know how I’d manage without electricity, indoor plumbing, my refrigerator, gas stove and microwave. I like long hot showers. I spend lots of time watching TV and movies, playing Xbox and searching around on the Internet. I am certain that there weren’t big box stores open 24/7 and offering anything anyone might need or want. I also cannot imagine what it would be like with now whole-home HVAC system. Not that long ago, the level insulation for houses wasn’t even a priority. They didn’t worry about caulking or weatherstripping. There were no Energy Star rated windows. How did people handle climate control? I guess they put up with overheated or chilly conditions, depending on the season. They built fires in the hearth or burned wood in a stove to heat the home in the Winter. They didn’t have heated blankets for the bed. In the summer, they couldn’t rely on the air conditioning to handle the heat. Opening windows and doors was the only way to cool the home. These day, we adjust the thermostat. We don’t even need to do it manually. We can use our smartphones to regulate the indoor temperature of the home from virtually anywhere. We can set the exact temperature we prefer with no work or hassle. With a whole-home HVAC system, there’s even the possibility of zone control. Each room can be set to a different temperature, and it doesn’t matter how hot or cold it is outside. HVAC technology is so widespread these days that it isn’t even all that expensive to purchase or install. Especially when you consider the importance of it.
