I had been working a customer service job for a local company for a few years.
It was basically just a call center where I answered the phone and got yelled at all day.
I decided last year that I was going to make a career move and decided to become an HVAC technician. The day after I got certified, I put in my two weeks’ notice. I love my job as an HVAC technician. There are a million reasons why I would recommend a job in the indoor comfort business. Probably the number one reason why I would recommend a career as an HVAC technician is that you won’t be stuck behind a desk all day. If you’re like me, sitting in one spot for 7.5 hours a day is not an “ideal work environment”. As an HVAC technician, you are always doing something with your hands, and you are always out of the office. Another reason I recommend a career as an HVAC technician is the customer service side of it. The only thing I liked about my job at the call center was the opportunity to interact with people and solve their problems. Unfortunately, in a call center it is very rare that I am the solution to their problem. I don’t know why I resisted an HVAC tech career path for so long. I think a lot of people try to stigmatize a career as an HVAC technician but I’m making almost double what I made at my previous job- I’m not exaggerating either! Also, for the record, yes there are plenty of HVAC technicians who got into this career after high school (I call them “the smart ones”) but I’m a college graduate. This HVAC technician career is the best career move I have made.
